Why You're Missing Shots and How to Fix It
Most goals aren't missed because of a weak shot. They're missed because of a slow decision.
You get the puck, you get a look, and instead of shooting, you think. Is this the right moment? Should I pass? What if I miss? By the time you've asked yourself all that, the lane's closed and the chance is gone.
Hesitation kills more shots than bad technique ever will.
The mindset shift
Trust the release you already have. Shoot the puck the instant you get a clean look — not the perfect look, a clean one. There's rarely a perfect one coming.
Whatever happened on your last shift stays on your last shift. A miss five minutes ago has no vote in what happens on this one. Clear it and go again.
Before you even step on the ice, see the shot going in. Not vaguely — specifically. Puck leaving your stick, finding the net, exactly where you meant it to go. Then pick one small spot when you're actually out there and commit to it fully. Not "the net." A spot.
And carry yourself like you're a threat every time you touch the puck. Not arrogance — just the quiet expectation that something good happens when it's on your stick.
Where this actually gets built
None of this comes from wanting it more on game night. It comes from repetition — hundreds of shots taken away from the pressure of a game, until your body doesn't need your brain's permission anymore. Hunt loose pucks and rebounds like you're supposed to score off them, because you are.
One technical note, since mindset and target go together
A shot aimed at open net mesh beats a shot aimed at a glove, every time — goalies catch what's shot right at hands that are already set. Force movement instead: low to the blocker side, through the five-hole as they shift, back against the grain as they lean one way. A quick toe-drag or stick fake before you release does more to beat a glove than a harder shot ever will.
Keep your eyes on where you want the puck to go, not on the goalie's equipment. The mind follows the eyes, and so does the shot.
